Sergei Vasiliev

Photographed by Sergei Vasiliev. The photos of the tattoos of Russian Criminals. The images were messages. And some of them displeased different gangs. And the authorities. Who sometimes removed the tattoos. One can only imagine the techniques used. And they wouldn’t have been expensive. An example I think where art has a significance greater than life itself.

Theo Prins

27 02 2015

Theo Prins is a concept artist working at ArenaNet on Guild Wars 2.

Since 2007 he’s been working as a concept artist in the video game industry. This opened the doors to a somewhat nomadic existence. First he worked for CCP games in Iceland, then Reloaded studios in South Korea and eventually began traveling and living in different cities throughout Asia while freelancing on the go. He’s had a temporary studio space aboard a container ship crossing the Pacific Ocean, telecommuted from the Himalayan foothills, lived on a small island off Hong Kong, visited ship breaking yards in India and has extensively explored street markets and alleyways around Asia.

His work is wonderful, combining the qualities of epics with the mechanisms of the abstract.

Alessandro Bavari

27 02 2015

Alessandro Bavari’s work so resembles the work of the Flemish artist H. Bosch. Their concentration on the truly horrid is fascinating. Like slowing down to watch a car accident. One wonders if these images are a result of personal experiences, an imaginative intellect, or art history. In any event they are fun to view.  Also check out his videos.

The Death of Lou Grant

26 02 2015

Death of Lou GrantThis book grew out of a much larger book about television and murder. I was writing about fantasies, the fantasies we have both about the lives of media stars and the lives of criminals. The Mary Tyler Moore Show became the background story for a man who is having a heart attack and is having his life flash before him. Except it isn’t his life, it is the life of Lou Grant, one of the fictional characters on the MTM Show.

I was trying to remember what I saw so absorbing about this kind of story. And I think it goes back to my reading of Plato’s ‘cave’ and Marshal McLuhan. We think we live in a world that exists in reality. But that reality is a creation of our species. Shadows on the wall. So what is real? That is the eye in the potato.

The Death of Lou Grant.

Lars Henkel

26 02 2015

Lars Henel is both original and derivative. Blue prints, surveyor notes, balance sheets, sewing prints, all antiquities from an early era. I found some of his work cold and indifferent. Still othes are filled with ambiance. Though little humour.

This work improves with viewing. I had some indifference with it before but now the some has disappeared. For apprehension.

Agate Apkalne

Beautiful work, mostly relating to a feminine perspective on childhood and fantasy. Or so I am guessing.
