The paintings of Catherine Abel are seductive. But is it the women?  Or the age they reflect? Many are what my mother used to call ‘big boned’. They seem real. At the same time they appeal to a nostalgic vein in all of us. Which leaves me in a quandary. (Is that where they find marble?) What am I looking at?

There is a world of sentimentalism/porn where men and women portray stereotypes (the gentleman, the lady, the princess, the bad boy). Its all a veneer. An adolescent view of a world that is not understood. I have always found it distracting and demeening. (Maybe I’m a prude.) There is a whole industry attached to this world, cosmetics, exercise equipment, the whole advertising industry.

Artemisia Gentileschi

This is a very interesting artist. Artemisia Gentileschi. Her paintings reflect her own pain and insights after she was raped. Than had to go to trial against the rapist. Her story is courageous. And her paintings reflect that. With a slightly psychotic and gruesome after taste.

A movie was made about her life. I have not seen it. It apparently plays very fast with the facts of her life and the trial.
