Yves Tanguy. The husband of Kay Sage. A lot of his work looks like a series of abstract figures on an alien landscape. Something you might see from NASA pictures of the moon or Mars. (If you see faces in every oddly shaped stone.) Or if you get down on your knees, the shoulders of most large highways. I’m not sure that Tanguy is a surrealist. If you get rid of the horizon you get images that are lively abstract, almost musical. And I think his work is more interesting if it were not associated with surrealism. That’s my take. And I was going to suggest it to Yves. But, of course, he wasn’t receiving guests.
